God Our Strength and Our Song (Isaiah 12:2)

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” — Isaiah 12:2 (KJV)

In Isaiah 12:2, the prophet gives us more than comfort—he gives us balance. God is described not only as salvation, but as both strength and song. These two belong together. Strength is the power to go on; song is the reason to do so.

We are often tempted to live on strength alone. Drive, discipline, and determination can carry us far—but not forever. Strength without song becomes mechanical. It pushes, but it forgets why. On the other hand, song without strength leaves us inspired but unable to endure. God does not offer one without the other. He supplies both.

This truth shapes a life ordered rightly:

Driven — because God gives vision worth pursuing. Disciplined — because obedience includes both starting when we resist and stopping when we want to continue. Devoted — because our strength is meant first for God, then for the home He has entrusted to us, and only then for ministry beyond it. Deliberate — because we are finite, and must choose wisely what we will do, when, and at what pace. And over all of it: Dependent — because none of these virtues are sustained by self alone.

Isaiah’s confession reminds us that God is not merely the goal of our labor; He is the source of our energy and the song that gives our labor meaning. Some seasons call for sprinting, others for steady plodding, and others still for rest and waiting. Faithfulness is not measured by speed, but by trust.

When God is both our strength and our song, we are freed to work hard without worshiping work, and to rest without fear.
